Invisalign FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions.
-
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-made aligners to gradually straighten your teeth without metal wires or brackets. During your consultation, we use advanced 3D imaging technology to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your smile. From there, a series of aligners is made to fit your teeth precisely at each stage of your Invisalign journey.
-
How does the Invisalign process work?
Invisalign aligners work by gradually moving your teeth in small, controlled steps. You’ll wear each set of aligners for a specific number of days before switching to the next one in the series. This process continues until your teeth reach their planned positions. Your dentist will determine the length of your treatment based on your individual needs.
-
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Your dentist will personalize the length of your Invisalign treatment based on your individual needs. Factors that can influence how long treatment takes include the alignment of your teeth and jaw, the shape of your bite, and how much movement is needed to achieve your desired results.
-
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
The Invisalign aligners are made with USP Class VI medical-grade, high molecular weight polyurethane resins. They are BPA free.
-
How often do I have to visit the dentist?
Because Invisalign aligners don’t need to be tightened or adjusted, you’ll have brief check-ins with your dentist every four to six weeks, during which your dentist will review your progress, check on your overall oral health, answer any questions, and make any adjustments to keep your treatment on track.
-
What are the primary features of Invisalign?
The features of Invisalign include:
- A discreet, low profile appearance
- Smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- Do not require adjustment appointments
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
-
How much does Invisalign cost?
Cost will depend on the severity of your case and duration of your treatment. For instance, the more severe the malocclusion, the more aligners you'll need and the more your treatment will cost.
In many cases, the cost of Invisalign is comparable to that of traditional orthodontic treatment (braces).
-
How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
Many patients find that Invisalign fits easily into their daily routine. You simply remove your aligners to eat, drink, brush, and floss, which means there are no extra dietary restrictions and you can maintain your regular oral hygiene without compromise.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
Because Invisalign aligners are removable, you can take them out to eat, which means there are no extra dietary restrictions; you can still enjoy all your favourite foods. To keep your aligners clear and protect your teeth, it’s best to remove them whenever you drink anything other than plain water.
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
The number of aligners you’ll need depends on the severity of your misalignment. During your initial consultation, your dentist will evaluate your teeth and provide an estimate of how many aligners will be required for your treatment.
-
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Anyone who has healthy teeth and gums is a potential candidate for Invisalign.
More and more adults are deciding to undergo orthodontic treatment these days, in large part because options like Invisalign have become available.
-
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can certainly be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has created a line of aligners to meet the unique needs of teenagers.
Invisalign Teen aligners have compliance indicators on them (small blue dots that fade away after the aligners have been worn enough) to help teens stay on track with their treatment.
They also come with eruption tabs that provide space for second molars and help prevent them from growing in crooked.
-
How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Most patients change to their next set of aligners every two weeks or so. Your dentist will tell you exactly how often you should switch out your aligners.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
Rinse your aligners every time you remove them to wash away saliva and plaque, which can contribute to dental decay and bad breath.
Soak your aligners as needed using products like denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, or the official Invisalign cleaning crystals.
Before putting your aligners back in, always brush and floss your teeth. Good oral hygiene is essential for keeping your teeth healthy and reducing the risk of cavities or decay. If food debris and bacteria get trapped between your teeth and aligners, it can lead to dental problems and unpleasant odours.
To clean your aligners, use a clear anti-bacterial soap. This is an affordable way to keep them fresh, clear, and free from harmful bacteria. Brush gently to avoid scratching them, then rinse thoroughly, and your aligners are ready to go!
-
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are removable so you can play sports without worrying about causing damage to your aligners.
However, keep in mind that Invisalign aligners must be kept in for a minimum of 22 hours a day, so plan your time carefully.
It is also recommended that you invest in a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth, as orthodontic treatment can cause your teeth to loosen slightly as they shift into their new positions, and this can make them more susceptible to damage.
-
Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes! Simply remove your aligners if required to practice playing your instrument, and pop them back in when you're done.
-
How do I store my aligners?
Your Invisalign aligners come with a case, which is the best place to store them whenever you take them out to keep them safe. Because the aligners are made of plastic, avoid leaving them in hot areas, as heat can cause them to warp or lose their shape.
